    • What is Pathways to Read?

Pathways to Read is a programme designed to equip pupils from Year 2 onwards with key skills to becoming competent and fluent readers.

Pathways to Read is a programme designed to equip pupils from Year 2 onwards with key skills to move them through the reading process towards becoming competent and fluent readers. To support this approach, clear detailed lesson plans and resources are linked to high-quality texts. Pathways to Read ensures engaging and purposeful reading lessons. The units can be used thematically alongside our award-winning programme Pathways to Write to encourage a whole school curriculum approach with the opportunity for topics to link across all year groups. Both programmes compliment one another. However, they can both be used successfully as a stand alone programme.

What our Pathways to Read schools say...

Lisa Carey, Year 6 Teacher/English Lead

The planning units and slides that The Literacy Company provide allow access to many wonderful worlds. Our children get to discover these worlds from the comfort of their classroom in a low-threat, high-impact environment. This is an innovative, exciting and inclusive sequence of learning which engages all children with the many aspects of the National Curriculum through the use of high-quality texts.

Kate Seager, Headteacher

It will ensure consistency throughout your school and you can rest assured that quality first teaching will be taking place in every classroom when this resource is being used. I have observed many Pathways to Read sessions and they have always been incredibly engaging, exciting and immersive. The children love it! The challenge of unpicking tricky language and inference is made easy for our children. The activities scaffold their learning and help them to build upon existing knowledge and apply in different contexts. An excellent, cost effective resource!

FAQ

  • Can you use it in mixed year classes?

As the NC for 3/4 and 5/6 are the same there would be no issues in doing so. We have a progression document which would support with this.

  • How can we manage a 1 /2 class?

In the mixed class they could join in with the whole class but when reading independently in the grouped session, Y1 would follow the progression of books in your chosen phonics programme.

  • How many sets of books are there for mixed ages?

There are 6 books per year group from Y2-Y6. If you were mixed ages, you could choose which text you wanted to cover. If you use P2W you might want to link with your planned P2W themes.

  • Would this replace guided reading as it is now? Can this be taught as whole class, guided or both?

We are working on a shared and grouped model. The grouped sessions would work in the same way as guided reading but with a clear mastery focus. You can teach it as whole class and guided as there is planning for both.

  • How many lessons per half term are there? Is this enough to teach more than one reading lesson per week per half term?

There are 6 sessions. The 6 sessions consist of a whole class session, a group session and a follow -on task You could run it as a full reading lesson of up to 90 minutes or split it into separate reading lessons.

  • Do the units have to be done in order within the year group?

We have thought about the progression of skills and texts as we do with P2W. They also link with the P2W themes. It would be possible to move some of them around if needed whilst still ensuring skill coverage.

  • As Pathways to Read starts at year 2, what do you suggest for EYFS/ Year 1?

For EYFS/Y1 we are following the recommendations of pupils needing to read fully decodable texts.
